Peace Matters is a three-year collaborative project between the Ghandi Worldwide Education Institute (GWEI), and PeaceWeavers, Inc. to break cycles of poverty and overcome violent crime in our cities.
Violence in our cities, especially within economically challenged communities, has reached pandemic proportions. Peace Matters addresses the urgent need to create Peace Councils; alliances between community leaders and organizations that examine the root causes of violence and strategize a course for conscious change. The proposed project also speaks to the need for infusing hope and inspiration especially among under-served youth so they can overcome injustice, establish community, and be empowered in their lives.
Under the vision of internationally renowned author and keynote speaker, Dr. Arun Gandhi (grandson of Mahatma Gandhi), Peace Matters launches on November 11, 2012 in Buffalo and continues in Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities during a 2013-15 timeline, with a minimum goal of 4 cities per year. Through authentic childhood stories and teachings, Dr. Gandhi will share the Gandhian legacy; that love and compassion can transform violence into peace. Each event also showcases and supports sustainable community projects, and provides area leaders a Peace Council framework to support a new vision of peace, healing, and unity for their communities and beyond.
